The Impromptu Speakers Academy Curriculum

WHY ME?

Imagine this. By spending 5 minutes per day improving your speaking, you can change your career over the next 5 years.

It's April 2016. I didn't get the promotion that I deserved at the National Basketball Association. I missed out on a 15% pay increase, which would have put me above $50,000 per year.

My manager and team told me that I was a great individual contributor. But I had "room to improve" when it came to presenting in front of leadership and clients.

She wasn't wrong. One time, I froze when I was about to present in front of an important client. My manager had to take over for me. She later gave me feedback that I rambled for too long when I spoke with leadership teams.

"It's almost as though you're trying to figure out your point as you speak," she said.

I was furious that I didn't get promoted. It didn't seem fair. So, I applied to the top MBA programs, hoping that I would be able to get a fresh start.

But in 2017, every program rejected me. After an interview, one admissions counselor told me:

"You have a great background. But It wasn't clear from the interview why you were pursuing an MBA. I couldn't follow your line of thinking."

The same theme. Whenever I spoke, I seemed to lose people.

In 2018, I decided to commit myself to improving my speaking skills every single day. I followed the same routine.

1. Record myself speaking about a topic for 1 minute.
2. Listen to myself and critique my audio.
3. Watch myself and critique my delivery.

I also studied how leaders in my companies spoke, and I noted down what I liked and didn't like. I studied executive and public speaking coaches on YouTube. I took what I learned and critiqued myself as though I were the coaches whom I watched.

Once I committed to this routine, that's when everything changed for me.

• I delivered presentations to more than 20 new customers when I led a sales group at CBS Interactive. I won their business.
• I got accepted to MIT Sloan for my MBA in 2019. While there, I taught MBA students, PhDs and engineering students leadership communication skills.
• I co-founded a software company in 2020. It helped senior ICs and managers improve their communication skills using AI. Even though we shut down the business in 2022, more than 20 speaking coaches paid for our product. I learned a ton from them.
• I posted a TikTok video sharing my knowledge about speaking in 2022. I couldn't get any traction for a year. Then, in 2023, I decided that I would "freestyle" my videos. No more scripts. Speak from the heart. Teach the speaking frameworks that I learned over the past 5 years. I posted this video helping people become articulate on the spot, and it changed my life.
• In early 2024, I earned a promotion to lead Lucid Software's Business Development team. I've built relationships with the top software companies and startups around the world. I lead executive meetings every week.
