How To Sound Clear And Intelligent When You're Put On The Spot
Read Time: 2 Minutes
Today, I'm going to show you how to always sound clear and articulate even when you're not prepared.
No more scripting answers. No more fumbling your words. No more sounding timid.
The key is to follow a speaking framework.
Why? When you can structure your point, you always know what to say next.
More importantly, you convey to any audience -- executives, customers, colleagues -- that you're in complete command of the room.
I intentionally practiced framework speaking two years ago. Since then:
- I've led successful tech partnerships with executives across Fortune 500s
- I got promoted to Director of Business Development
- I've built a social following of nearly 500K people in ~8 months teaching this subject
Here's MY FAVORITE FRAMEWORK to mastering on-the-spot speaking.
PREPS: Point, Reason, Example, Point, Segue
To sound clear and intelligent when you're put on the spot, follow the PREPS framework below. I highly recommend watching the video above so that you know how to put it into practice (see timestamps). But in short:
Point (0:50 - 2:40) – A one-sentence summary that encapsulates your main answer to the question.
- Key Tip: Be sure to 1) pause for at least 3 seconds before speaking, 2) look up while pausing, and 3) reframe the question in your answer.
Reason (2:40 - 3:53) – A one- to two-line explanation that supports your main answer.
- Key Tip: Be sure to use SIGNPOSTS -- e.g., "the reason why..." or "I believe this because..."
Example (3:53 - 6:00) – A data point and/or story that supports your reason
Point (6:00 - 6:20) – A recap of your original point and/or broader takeaway
Segue (6:20 - end) – A transition (e.g., a question, remark, or next step)
- Key Tip: Ask open-ended questions. You can find examples HERE.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Understanding the PREPS framework is the first crucial step to commanding the room. But to make this framework and many others feel like second nature, it requires practice in various scenarios.
